(1794-1878) was born in Massachusetts, received his law degree, and worked as a lawyer for a number of years before pursuing a career in writing. Bryant wrote his first poem
"Thanatopsis"
, (Greek for "meditation on death") when he was only 17 years old, and the poem was published in the literary magazine, North American Review. It was received by the public with great enthusiasm, and thereafter his poems appeared regularly in the magazine. Another one of his important works, was
"The Ages",
a panorama in verse of the history of civilization, culminating in the establishment of the United States. In 1825 Bryant moved to New York City to pursue a literary career.
Bryant embraced "Romanticism" and became an accomplished poet and journalist. He was considered one of the New England "Fireside Poets" whose verses were enjoyed by families while gathered around the hearth.
Bryant's poetry is tender and graceful, influenced by his contemplative melancholy, and a love of solitude and the silence of the woods.
