    Description

Makah/Northwest Coast Basketry Hat with Bear Motif and Abilone embellishments UNIQUE. I purchased this hat at a yard sale on the Squaxin Island Reservation. It is a tightly woven basketry hat with a Bear motif. The hat is embellished with 6 abalone shells around the body of the hat. The hat shows signs of having been worn, but it is in excellent used condition. There are no rips or tears. The weaving is a little different than usual Makah weaving, and the knot on the very top is very similar to the knots you see in the center of Southern Oregon/Northern California Basketry. A very unique piece. The brim is 16 inches wide, and the brim to top measures 6 inches. This hat will be shipped with USPS.
