    Description

Up for auction is this old card mounted photograph of a Hilarious Camping Scene found at the Estate Sale of Dorthy Hardie in Ardmore Oklahoma. This was probably taken in the Arbuckle Mountains just north of Ardmore. (DOROTHY BRADFORD HARDIE - Born FEB 29 1908 Died OCT 11 1988) The “scene” is of a group of people, outside in front of a large tent. There are two men sitting in the middle of the group looking at each other. The one on the right right has a dubble barrel shotgun in his lap and is holding something in his hand. The man with the mustache on the left is wearing a dress and womans bonnet and has a rifle leaning on his lap. To the left of these two is a young man holding a large ax. A young man standing behind him looks to be whittling on a stick. To the right of the two men is a standing bare foot boy with his walking stick and sitting on the ground is a young lady that looks like she is cutting something with a knife. All in all a very strange group. The mount and image has the left hand top corner missing and the image is a little light in contrast and tone. The surface has some silvering to it as well as a couple of dents. The writing on the back of the mount states “Dorthy Hardie Estate Ardmore OK. The image measures @ 4.25 x 6.75 inches.

The old house that was next door to where I grew up, it was built about 1890 by a local lawyer who was the grandfather of the lady who lived there until she died. I'm almost sure that he was the lawyer S.B. Bradford mentioned on page 42 of the book. The house burned 2 or 3 years ago. It was a historical treasure and was located at 811 "C" Street and was just filled with old artifacts. The house next door to where I grew up was lived in by Dorothy. Hardie until her death. Her mother also lived there when I was young and was for many years a school teacher in Ardmore. She taught first grade to both my mother in 1917 and my brother in 1943. Mrs. Hardie's father was named Bradford and she inherited the house. I have a post card I found stuck between some law books there postmarked Jul 29, 1887 in Twin Mound, Kas., addressed to Lewis H. Bradford in Topeka, Ks. The "Ardmore Through A Camera" book says that Hon. S.B. Bradford was in Kansas for a lot of years, including being a legislator."
