Very rare and original, 1903 Card Mount Photograph of the interior of a Dry Goods / General Store and Cigar / Tobacco Shop featuring a fantastic array of Advertising Signs, Product Packaging, Labeled Crates and a large number of Christie’s Biscuit Company Display Bins. The Newspaper displayed atop the Cigar display case along with Brands of the Cereals, Biscuits and other Dry Goods displayed in this wonderful image leads us to believe that it was likely a Store located in Toronto, Canada.
This outstanding, 1903 Card Mount Photo measures approx. 8 1/8" by 5" and is mounted on its original card mount (overall size is 10" by 7"). A Toronto Newspaper is displayed atop the Cigar display case leading us to believe that the Shop was located in Toronto.
This wonderful Photograph pictures the interior of an early 20th century Dry Goods / Grocery Store / General Store that was also a Cigar / Tobacco Shop. A clerk in an apron stands behind the counter at the left and a well dressed gentleman (possibly the owner of the shop) can be seen at the right. The shop is chock full of Advertising Signs and product packages. The products advertised on the signs include Heinz pickles and ketchup, Sunlight Soap, Pearline Soap, Orange Meat Cereal, Gillett’s Perfumed Powder, Cigars, other Soaps, etc. There is a large display of Christie’s Biscuit advertising front bins that are similar to the Tin National Biscuit Company Bins seen in many US dDry Goods stores of the period. There is a 1903 calendar on the wall dating the image. At the left there is a large, curved glass display case filled with boxed of Cigars and at the lower left hand corner of the image is a second curved glass display case that appears to contain various brands of cut plug tobacco. This Store is simply chock full of wonderful product packages and advertising signs of the period and is one of the best representations of just what a turn of the 20th century Dry Goods store looked like inside!! This rare and wonderful, turn of the 20th century Card Mount Photo is in excellent condition. The Photograph itself is clean and crisp exhibiting sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The card mount is also clean and crisp with only a hint of light edge wear only.
