1880-1890's Cabinet Card Photograph of a Rock Formation in Cheyenne Canyon near Colorado Springs, Colorado, called 'The Pillars of Hercules', part of a series produced by W. E. Hook, Colorado Springs; measures 8" X 5”. Cabinet Card Photograph" is in excellent condition, photograph very clean, minor surface scratches, corners are slightly soft with some chipping, edges are crisp, focus is sharp and the contrast is strong, well preserved. A rare and original  "1880-1890's Cabinet Card Photograph of a Rock Formation in Cheyenne Canyon near Colorado Springs, Colorado, called 'The Pillars of Hercules'"  The photo is part of a series produced by a local photographer, who operated a photography studio in Colorado. In fact W. E. Hook's "Colorado Wholesale View House" had THREE studios  located in Colorado:  Manito (1880-1890), Colorado Springs (1891-1897), and North Tejon (1896-1897).
This fantastic, period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 7-3/8" X 4-3/8” (≈19 cm. X 11 cm. )  and is mounted on its original white Card Mount (card measures approx. 8" X 5” (≈ 20 cm. X 13 cm. )  The back gives information about the Photographer and his business.  The photograph was taken from the middle of the river, to give us a great shot between the two "pillars."  The photo was colorized, so that the pillars appear pinkish.   It makes you wonder what color they really are.
Nevertheless, this very early, very lovely "1880-1890's Cabinet Card Photograph" is in excellent condition.  The photograph is very clean.   In only see one minor surface scratch, and one on the back as well.   (See the photos above please.)  All of the  corners are slightly soft and some have a tiny bit of chipping, but the edges are crisp and clean.   The focus of the photograph is sharp and the contrast is strong.  Both the Photograph and the Card Mount are crisp and very well preserved.
The Pillars of Hercules can be seen in the popular Cheyenne Canyon Trail, and is popular with hikers even today.  There is a scenic driving trail through the area as well.
