Description
Very rare and original, ca1905 Card Mount Photograph being a Copy of a simply amazing, 1869 Bird’s Eye View of the City of Winona, Minnesota by Winona Photographer A. E. Dobbs. This original, ca1905 Card Mount Photo measures approx. 6 1/2" by 4 1/4" and is mounted on its original photographer’s card mount (card mount measures approx. 9” by 7”). The Photograph is a wonderful, bird’s-eye-view of the City of Winona looking southeast from Center and Second streets in Winona originally taken in 1869.
The image can be dated by the very large Circus Broadside on the wall of the Winona Bakery in the foreground. The Illustrated Broadside Poster Advertises “Dan Castello’s Great Show”. This Circus was organized in 1869 and traveled by boat on the Great Lakes during that 1869 season. In 1870 the owners partnered with P. T. Barnum to form "P. T. Barnum’s Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Circus and Hippodrome" - Barnum’s first venture into the Traveling Circus world – and the rest is history.
At the foreground left of the Photo we see the main street of Winona with a number of business displaying trade signs. Included are the Winona Bakery, E. W. Farrington Groceries, Boots and Shoes, Goldsborough Brothers, a second Boot and Shoe Maker, a Cash Store, a leather shop, etc. The beginnings of new construction can be seen at the foreground right and the homes and business of Winona spread out toward the foothills in the distance. In the original 1869 Photo someone has marked a rather large home with an “X” - likely identifying the place that they lived.
The card mount carries the impressed mark of the Winona Photographer A. E. Dobbs.
This rare and wonderful, turn of the 20th century Card Mount Photo is in excellent condition. The Photograph is clean and crisp and exhibits strong contrast and rich, warm tonality however the focus is somewhat soft due to the nature of a Copy Image. The card mount has some light soiling and some minor edge wear.
A very rare and original, ca1905 Card Mount Photograph being a Copy of a simply amazing, 1869 Bird’s Eye View of the City of Winona, Minnesota and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee.
